Welcome to “Animal Welfare” Guyana
This website is dedicated to the prevention of cruelty and abuse to all animals inflicted at the hands of humans.
When or wherever you see anyone abuse any kind of animal please contact this website and/or your local animal shelter (in Guyana known as GSPCA).
Animal Welfare was created as an information network to help educate the public and improve conditions for our animal friends.
There has been a significant increase in animal cruelty in Guyana in recent years. This seems to be linked to an unstoppable increase in the dog population. Take a look at the cruelty to animals page and see for yourself.
Animal cruelty must be stopped and the best way to make that happen is to educate the public. Guyanese have traditionally seen dogs as guard animals and most children grow up afraid of them. Adults have grown up seeing only one side of dogs. We would like to help them see the other side.
Guyana is fortunate to have hundreds of species of wild animals. On a weekly basis they can be seen on the roadways in bush trucks and minibuses being transported to Georgetown. Many die during the first month of captivity because most people do not know how to feed or care for them and life in a small cage is hell for most. Animal Welfare will share case studies and photos of animals taken from their environment and forced to live in the city.
You can help animals in Guyana by:
Convincing someone to return a wild animal to their natural habitat;
Adopting a dog or cat from GSPCA or off the street;
Educating children about the positive side of dogs and cats;
Reporting cases of cruelty to us, your local shelter and police;
Controlling dog and cat populations by spay and neutering your pets;
Exchanging information with others on how to control abuse; or
Just by making life easier for our animal friends.
Thanks for your visit and have a great time here in Animal Welfare Guyana. We hope to meet you here on a regular basis!
